Water Damage Granby – A Burst Water Pipe While on Vacation

The homeowner left for a week-long vacation and came back to a water nightmare. The owner made arrangements for someone to look after their home while away, as per the instructions and requirements of their home insurance policy. Their friend found their basement full of water on the day before the owners were to return. Fortunately, he turned the water off and immediately called the owner who called for help.

Our SERVPRO team responded to this water damage emergency in Granby and quickly took control of the situation. Since the owner was not home, our technicians met the homeowner's friend and also the insurance adjuster. We provided an assessment of the situation and the steps that needed to be taken immediately to minimize the damage. Approval was given to proceed.

Our team immediately initiated the following steps:

  • Verified that it was safe to enter the basement which had approximately one foot of water in it
  • Used a portable water extractor to remove as much water as possible
  • Used a squeegee attachment to remove water from all hard surfaces
  • Removed area carpets for further drying
  • Removed all materials on the floor for further drying and recovery
  • Extracted water from the subfloor
  • Dehumidifiers were set up along with air movers to enhance the drying process

There was over one foot of water damage in the basement. As a result, the lower portion of the drywall and insulation in the walls was also replaced. Fortunately, this was a tiled floor which did not require restoration. Although the restoration activities continued after the homeowner arrived home, the initial emergency was under control, and recovery/restoration efforts were well underway. The growth of mold was minimized due to the fast response by the SERVPRO team and the homeowner's friend.

Our SERVPRO team prepared a complete report of the steps taken, final moisture readings, and the restored items. Some items, such as paper-based documents and photographs, cannot be restored to their original condition. We restore these items to the best condition possible.
