SERVPRO Explains Factors in Drying and Restoration Post Water-Loss

Every Pittsfield home is at risk for flood issues. The most residential flooding comes from failed plumbing such a split hose or a broken dishwasher. That means the water is usually clean and free of contaminants, but removal and remediation still takes time and can be costly. A failing dishwasher can flood an entire home in one afternoon.

Restoration of Pittsfield water damage involves drying the structure as carefully as possible while still performing each task as quickly as possible. SERVPRO carefully monitors four factors to ensure we return each home to its normal, dry state without causing any secondary damage.

Temperature – The best environment for every home is the 70 to 90-degree range. If we can use the home heating system, that is the best method since it spreads an even heat throughout. If this is not an option, we bring in space heaters for each affected room and hallway. To prevent secondary damage, we do not allow the temperature to go above 80 degrees.

Humidity – We test each room for air moisture content. If it is too high, the humidity level can warp furniture and prevent or slow drying actions. We lower the humidity by installing a dehumidifier in each affected room. Depending on the moisture content level, these devices can draw out over 20 gallons of water from the air each day. We can safely lower the humidity level by 20 percent each day.

Evaporation – Water converts to vapor, and this process increases significantly once standing water is brought down to less than inches in depth. The longer it stood, however, more was absorbed by carpets and floors. SERVPRO technicians determine which areas of the home were under water for the most prolonged period and set up dehumidifiers, air movers, and exhaust fans to concentrate on those first.

Air Movement – The fans and air movers we use to increase evaporation also force cooler air out of the home while forcing warm air across walls and floors, drying them. Restoration crews carefully monitor the warmth of the air flow to ensure the temperature does not rise too high, too quickly.

Eliminating the effects of water damage is a careful process that takes time. Homeowners may get frustrated, but SERVPRO of Hampshire County is here to explain each step and even help with insurance adjusters. If you need our services, call us at (413) 324-1300 today.
