Northampton Storm Damage Drying Techniques
SERVPRO Maximizes Flooding Removal Time in Northampton
Excess rainfall can affect nearly every home in some fashion. When it causes streams or rivers to crest their banks, the problem increases significantly and can cause thousands of dollars in repairs.
Standing water is the primary source of flood damage to Northampton homes, but only removing it lessens the problem; it does not eliminate it. To do that, SERVPRO removes moisture from the property and the air. When it comes to lowering the air humidity levels, we use either a Closed or an Open system.
For a Closed system, we seal the affected area from other parts of the home and outside air. Dehumidifiers are the first machines we use for this process. A Closed system is a preferred method for smaller areas with a high humidity level since it is easier to seal off a single-entry point with plastic sheeting or to close and seal the doors and windows. Technicians also make use of the HVAC in a Closed system; air conditioning can significantly help the dehumidifiers to speed up the process.
An Open system is more efficient for larger areas. We use fans and air movers to force out the moist air inside the home and replace it with the drier air from the outside. However, if the humidity level of the air outside is not significantly lower than inside, this is not an efficient process. Higher temperatures outside are also necessary.
Although an Open system can work faster, it does come with a set of disadvantages. Additional monitoring is required to check the equipment and to keep watch on the open doors and windows to prevent trespassing, theft, and vandalism. If we use the HVAC, then there is an energy loss for every minute it is on. Finally, the weather can turn and the process must either stop or switch to a Closed system.
